I have put up a page providing information on various 3D modeling programs. I have geared it toward the novice (like myself) . It is kind of a review and a way to let new people know that you don't have to spend piles of money to build quality objects and worlds. It is also from the perspective of a "non coder". Please let me know what you think.

Hi Omind thanks for posting and welcome to the Seamless3d forum but you forgot to post you URL Thanks to X I have your URL here spafon.com/SoftwareReview/AnAmateurs3DSoftwareReview.htmI am much interested in learning from people who don't have a programming background in what concepts are found easy and what are not so easy. Something I much think about in the design of seamless is how do most who can use computers understand concepts like drag and drop, folders, files copy and paste and pasting short cuts ect. Much of these common concepts seamless3d revolves around one way or another. Perhaps I need to write a tutorial: "relating seamless3d to the common concepts that you already use and understand" I wonder.

As a result of your review (which I am still reading during small breaks) Omind I have downloaded Anim8or a program I have never heard of before but can see it has been arround for some time also as a result of your review I have downloaded Wings a program I have heard of for some years now but never downloaded it before. I never knew so many free 3d modelling programs existed its taking me a while to take them all in where were they all hiding when I started VRML in 2000 or started work on Seamless3d? lol I have blender already installed and have had it for about a year but never had enough time to make something even simple with it yet. I am wondering now if the best way to get people to understand seamless concepts is to write some tutorials I have already written for seamless but for a different modeller or a combination of modellers. I think this could be a good way of de-alienating seamless for those who know another program well and it might reveal some of the strengths and weaknesses in different programs. I think this should have some value too because I like the way Microsoft has an example of some code and show the same example in 3 or 4 different languages. This I found a great help for me relating C++ to their proprietary languages VB and C# which I know little about. I am thinking a good tutorial to begin with would be my "Making an Avatar from Immediate Spheres and Cylinders": www.seamless3d.com/tut/immediate_av/index.htmlBecause vertices and polygons are pretty universal and there should be a lot of programs that let you edit them in this direct way. For a less direct way of editing vertices where you use shape generators of some kind I would like to do a comparison of my build nodes to other techniques. NURBS, Splines and possibly Polygon Subdivision programs will come into this category although Subdivision programs also might come under the previous category of direct vertex editing some what. I think its impossible to cleanly compare one program or way with another because you have to take into account what the criteria is for the task, like how easy it is for the user to make something simple does not mean it will be easier to make something more complex. Also the different scenarios reality is going to dish up will rarely be quite the same as a simple tutorial. What ever the case though I hope it might spark up a bit of interest 3d modelling including seamless and perhaps some positive debate on good ways to model. Because I know little about programs besides seamless I would be very grateful for help from others who know a thing or 2 about a program I might write a parallel tutorial for.

I didn't know there were so many either, but I got surfing around and then got curious. I also have Blender but I too, have not had time to play with it as much as would like. A new marriage and baby eat up most of my free time now. I feel that after looking at the various way these programs approach escentially the same problem, it's no wonder that this type of thing can be so frustrating! I think you do a fine job with Seamless and I find it no more confusing than Blender or some of the others. But then I get easily confused ;D! Must be because I tend to do this stuff late at night when everyone has gone to sleep!. As an aside, I seem to remember that Skippybrand works in Wings. I might try to get him to imput into the forum on my site so I can learn moreabout it too.

Each small prog has his qualities , and wings has some , very "funny"..... At the end , I and my mathematique colleague we had choosen to work with Internet Space builder , but may be it would be more funny with Wings or ...........another one .....japanese ..... hummmmm ..........ah oui ! ah Omi, your list is great! Herr Steiner has a wings3d tutorial on cyworx-board: www.cyworx.com/viewforum.php?f=3Maybe it helps you on the first steps. And if you like, I would love to have your GPL 3d tools reviews there. I started the board to collect such infos, especial on 3d GPL software.
